Random Beer Roundup - The Let's Relocate Michigan to Indiana Edition

We are in beautiful Grand Rapids, Michigan this morning getting ready to start day 2 of our little beer vacation. I always forget just how beautiful it is to see the fall leaves change. But what is more beautiful than the leaves is the number of breweries up here making really great beer. My favorite place so far has been the HopCat, a microbrewery with an extensive draft and bottle list. Since we could walk to our hotel from there (and Founders), we were able to sample more of their offerings. The HopCat has a variety of taps and bottles from several of the Michigan breweries that we won't be able to see on this trip (like Short's, the Livery, and Hideout) so it was nice to be able to sample some of their beers. The best part was that they offered 2.5 oz. samples for a $1 each.

In other news...
Rock Art Brewery is being told to stop using the name of their "Vermonster" beer by a well know energy drink maker because they claim there will be some confusion. Without similar resources to fight, they are in a lose-lose situation. Either they change the name, or they possibly lose the entire brewery fighting for it. The one thing Rock Art has is an awesome community of craft beer fans that extends far beyond Vermont.

If there is something coming up that is not listed, we would love to hear about it. News, reviews, info, etc., to share for our next Random Beer Roundup can be submitted to hoosierbeergeek@gmail.com.

So, SAVE VERMONSTER. This is the Random Beer Roundup.

What's Brewing

From John at Half Moon Brewery in Kokomo:
The “Duke Of Double” IPA

O.G = 1.080 ABV = 8.4% IBU = 113

Here it is. The one that hopheads of central Indiana have been waiting
for. A Double IPA worthy of a title, not just a name. The Duke of Double
is royalty among IPA’s. It has a smooth caramel malt taste and
full-bodied mouth feel that’s buried somewhere between the fragrant aroma
and GINORMOUS flavor of American grown cascade hops. At 8.4% ABV and 113
IBU’s, the Duke Of Double could be trouble if not handled with caution.

Coming Soon: Bock

From Greg at Lafayette Brewing Co. in Lafayette:
On tap:
Ouiatenon Wit Bier, Prophet's Rock Pale Ale, East Side Bitter, Pipers' Pride Scottish Ale, Tippecanoe Common Ale, Eighty-Five, Black Angus Oatmeal Stout and a couple of our fall seasonals: Rejuvenator Blonde Doppelbock and Hunters Moon Pale Ale. We're also pouring Weeping Hog IPA from our beer engine.

From Andrew at Oaken Barrel in Greenwood:
The craze that surrounds our annual release, Apple Buzz, is in full swing. We have already sold half of the 28 barrels that we produced in just four days. For the unfamiliar, this beer combines wort, apple cider, and honey to make an amazingly popular beverage that pushes the envelope. Make sure people come out real soon if they want some this year.

We are having a Pumpkin Festival on October 31st from 12pm-3pm. We will be releasing this year's version of our Pumpkin Ale, which was the 2009 Indiana Brewer's Cup Best in Show beer over the summer. More details for this event to come...

From Charles at Upland Brewing Co. in Bloomington:

Upcoming beers

Winter Warmer - Release: Nov. 9 - A barleywine with a very dark color achieved through a long boil. The finest British and American malts are used to create a large malt character.
